Weekend Events: Exploring Nature, Dancing, Shopping and Civic Responsibility

This weekend’s event list is crammed full of fun for the whole family!  Get outdoors to enjoy the beauty of Back Bay and False Cape State Park, take a time out for shopping at the Sandbridge Shoppes Open House Party and then do your part to make a difference in our community at the Spring Beach Clean Up!  That’s a pretty well-rounded set of weekend entertainment options.  Enjoy!

Night Eyes and Night Skies  (Friday Night)
Journey through scenic Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge to the heart of False Cape State Park away from city lights and traffic to observe the night sky and listen for owls. Look for shooting stars and other bright lights in the sky as you learn to pick out prominent constellations. Reservations are required. Call (757) 426-7128 to sign up.   Cost: $10/person.

2012 Bayview Dance Party at the Baja Restaurant (Friday Night)
The Academy of Rock will perform in the Bayview at 7:00 PM.  Come check out some great young local talent.  There is a small cover charge to help the Academy.  At 10:00 PM, we welcome home Sandbridge’s own DJ Mikey “White Shoes” Johnson from his winter gig in Snowmass Colorado. We’re sure you will like the tracks he lays down and the official kick off of the 2012 Bayview Dance Party!  The Sandbridge Shuttle will be running for your comfort and enjoyment.  Call 721-2114 for a safe ride.

Walk on the Wild Side (Saturday Morning)
Take a 1-mile (round-trip) hike in the wilderness of False Cape State Park and find out what plants grow in this coastal environment and how they were used by American Indians. Look for animal tracks to see who lives here and how to distinguish between them. Reservations are required. Call (757) 426-7128 to sign up.  Cost: $10/person.

Sandbridge Shoppes Open House Party (Saturday Afternoon)
Photos in the Sand and The Sterling Pelican are hosting an Open House Party on May 19 at the Sandbridge Shoppes.  Jewelry made by local artists will be on display.

 Stars Kayak Paddle (Saturday Night)
Paddle under the starlit sky in Back Bay while picking out prominent constellations and looking for shooting stars. Kayaks and equipment are provided. The cost is $20/person. Reservations are required. Call (757) 426-7128 to sign up.

Early Bird Kayak Paddle (Sunday Morning)
Explore the marshes of Back Bay by kayak while observing marsh birds and other wildlife. Kayaks and equipment are provided. No paddling experience is necessary. The cost is $20/person. Reservations are required. Call (757) 426-7128 to sign up.

Wash Woods History Tour (Sunday Morning)
Take a scenic tram ride through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge to the site of the historic Wash Woods community in what is now False Cape State Park. Hike the one-mile (round-trip) nature trail to the church and cemetery site where the steeple and gravestones remain. Reservations required.  Call (757) 301-7329. Cost: $8/adults; $6/children & seniors.

Civic League Beach Clean Up (Sunday Afternoon)
Join the Civic League as they diligently work to keep the 5 miles of Sandbridge Beach clean and pristine.  Meet at Little Island Park at 1pm – rain or shine!  Volunteers will be treated to a cookout afterwards.
