Have you been enjoying some sun and sand time this week?  The Summer Solstice arrived this week along with a heat wave that sent temps soaring into the 90’s.  The good news is that this weekend’s forecast is a little cooler (mid-80’s), but please still be mindful to drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen while you are out and about this weekend.

Friday Evening Tram Rides at False Cape – Friday at 6:00 pm
Special tours will be run on Friday evenings from 6:00pm to approximately 7:30pm.   They will cover only the Refuge grounds and focus on the wildlife and history of the Back Bay. Please call ahead for registration for this event at (757)301-7329.

Sunset Kayak Paddle at False Cape – Friday at 5:30 pm
Explore Back Bay and its marshes by kayak at False Cape State Park as the sun is setting over the bay. Kayaks and equipment are provided. No paddling experience is necessary. Reservations are required. Call (757) 426-7128 to sign up. Cost: $20/person.

Bam Bam Betty at the Baja – Friday at 8:00 pm
Bam Bam Betty Band takes the stage at 8pm in the Bayview Lounge!  Live music, great food and watching the sunset on the bay… doesn’t get much better than that!

Great American Backyard Camp Out at False Cape – Saturday at 9:00 am
Camping at False Cape is a real adventure.  In fact, camping at False Cape requires that you reserve by telephone so that you can be debriefed about the primitive conditions in the park.

As part of the nationwide Great American Backyard Campout, False Cape is offering a Wilderness Survival Skills course.  You will be transported to the park on our open-air tram.  After traveling Back Bay Wildlife Refuge, you will meet your guide at the Visitor Center.  During the wilderness survival skills program, you will learn about shelter building, purifying water, and fire-making, as well as get a glimpse of the primitive camping conditions in the park.  Trip meets at Little Island City Park. Welcome to Wash Woods at False Cape – Sunday at 9:00 am
Take a scenic tram ride through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge to the site of the historic Wash Woods community in what is now False Cape State Park. Hike the one-mile (round-trip) nature trail to the church and cemetery site where the steeple and gravestones remain. Call (757) 301-7329. Cost: $8/adults; $6/children & seniors.
