Between the Waters
Sandbridge marks the beginning of the barrier islands stretching south into the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Sandbridge's unique location offers 4.5 miles of wide-open beaches on the Atlantic Ocean, while you get more than half of that open to the bay on the western side. This incredible combination means Sandbridge is easy to access but isolated enough to feel like you're secluded from the hustle-and-bustle of Virginia Beach.
Enjoy relaxing days on the beach or take full advantage of all that the bay has to offer. Calm bay waters are great for fishing and kayaking to get an up-close look at the beauty of the local wildlife and nature. The opportunities are endless for the adventurers at heart.

Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge
Covering 9,108 acres, the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is the first area that you meet when heading south from Sandbridge. Barrier islands, sand dunes, freshwater marshes, and maritime woods are just a few of the features of this breathtaking, protected area. The refuge's marshlands mainly occupy the islands within Back Bay's waters. This refuge is essential for the survival of various wildlife, providing a habitat for species such as loggerhead sea turtles, peregrine falcons, and even bald eagles. You'll find excellent hiking trails, a visitor information center, and opportunities for group educational programs if you plan ahead!
False Cape State Park
Connected to the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is False Cape State Park. This expansive, untouched area separates North Carolina's Outer Banks from Virginia and offers endless adventure. This is one of the last remaining undeveloped portions of the Atlantic coastline so it's well worth checking out.
You can hike, bike, or camp in the park and even take guided kayaking trips to explore the 3,844-acre park. If you're not able to get around on foot or bike, the park does offer a tram that takes you through the wildlife area that operates year-round.
